Marty Schreibman sworn in as President for 2010-2011

Marty's Speech:
Good evening fellow pharmacists and guests.
In my inaugurating speech in 2006, the theme was Bobby’s Dylan’s
song
“The Times They are a changing”. Little did I realize how much
pharmacy
have changed in just the last three years.
Throughout the country there has been an increase in the number
of
College of Pharmacies. Here in Ohio over the last 6 years we have 3
new
college of pharmacies. Due to the recession, chains like CVS and
Walgreen’s
are not building new stores in America which means they aren’t
hiring new
Pharmacists. Due to the increase of pharmacy students and
the fact chains aren’t hiring, it has become difficult to find a job
in some
parts of the country.
Many of the chain stores are giving away free antibiotics, and
lowering
Prices On their generic prescriptions while at the same time they
are
receiving less CoPays money from the State.
Due to the recession most states are cutting back on the co-pays
they pay
pharmacies. The State of Ohio is actually paying pharmacies lower
co-pays
then they paid in 1970.
The cost of running a pharmacy have greatly increased over the
last 10
Years due to higher salaries for pharmacist. In addition stores have
been
forced to spend more and more money on advance computer systems in
order
to stay current on the billing and to provide better service.
The State of Ohio has started a new program for technicians called
“Emily
law” Which will increase the cost of filling a prescription because
of the
additional requirements placed on them.
As I stated in my original speech, it is very difficult to get
younger
Pharmacists to join, local, state and national organizations. With
the
Increased cost of filling a prescription and with more and more
Pharmacists getting their licenses, it will be become even more
difficult for
Pharmacists to find jobs and receive good benefits. If younger
pharmacists
can not find the time to join profession organizations they may find
out
That the lucrative jobs and benefits as a pharmacist will be harder
to keep
and find. Management will be forced to have fewer technicians to
work
In the pharmacy and put more and more pressure on the pharmacists to
Complete more prescriptions with less help.
As the older generation of pharmacists who help build this
organization
are retiring and the next generation of newer pharmacists decide not
to take
their place, pharmacists will no longer have a voice in determining
their own
destiny.
It is no longer good enough to say ”let someone else do it”
because
There is no else to do it but you! As another one of Bobby Dylan’s
songs
titled “It ain’t me babe” if you do not step up there is no one
else who will. I challenge every pharmacist in this room to get one
new
younger person to join Our organization. Those that get the
scholarship
from our organization should join our organization or their local
organization if they move somewhere else. For those students that
go to
Ohio State and find jobs in central Ohio we like you to join our
organization
and encourage your friends to join too.
Without your help the Academy of pharmacy of Central Ohio will
Disappear.
As an organization and there will be no one here to speak on your
behalf and you will work longer harder days for less benefits.
